Hello fellow dogs and dog parents! Reba here again, bringing you our latest adventure. This past Sunday, all my favorite humans went for a picnic and brought me along, of course! This time we went to Southford Falls State Park in Southbury. It’s about 169 acres and was turned into a state park in 1932. I think that’s a long time ago? Anyways, there were four humans who made the trip and look who also came with us!

Ladies and Gentleman, that’s my little brother, Frankie! The vet said to give him half a Dramamine and wait at least 30 minutes before taking him anywhere. My people gave him an hour. While he lasted longer than he normally does, about 40 minutes into the trip, he got sick. He only had about ten minutes to go, he couldn’t wait?! Good thing my people were prepared—they laid down a couch cover and towels just in case!
We get to the park, and my little brother was so excited! This was his first adventure since he was adopted, and it showed. He barked a lot at first—at people, at other dogs. I’m surprised he didn’t bark at the large geese family in the pond! It was a little embarrassing. You don’t see me behaving like that! There were a lot of other dogs there, too, and they were all well behaved. Then a guy showed up with another Chihuahua, and he was barking at someone, although not as loudly as my brother. I’m thinking it’s just a Chihuahua thing. I’ll stick with being a Corgi-mix, thank you very much! Oh, see this sign that you come across on the way in? Remember it for later!

The walk from the parking lot to the falls is pretty short, so you don’t have to go wondering too far to find it! They had some picnic tables near the falls, and on the other side of them, a little further away, there was a large grassy area you could sit at. There’s also a picnic pavilion over there as well. We put our things on a picnic table near the falls, then I wanted to go explore! I enjoyed looking at the falls.

After watching the water a bit, I took my humans down a trail, which led to this covered bridge! I’m not normally a fan of bridges but I strutted across this like the champ that I am. On the other side, the trail splits two different ways. You could either go straight, or you could turn left, which would loop you back to the top of the falls (which aren’t very high). Because it was a warm day, I was having trouble breathing, so my human took the left, and Frankie came with us, but her brother went straight. After he came back, he and his mother wanted to find the watchtower, but I was all for chilling under the picnic table. My human stayed behind with me and her father, while the other two took Frankie. Good thing I didn’t go! Apparently, there’s a pretty good hill to go up, which would have been too much for me. Then they got lost! The trails weren’t clearly marked near the top. They never made it to the watchtower, as they hit a couple of dead-ends. They had to pick up Frankie a couple of times, especially over a branch that had come down but was too high for him to make it over.

While they were off getting lost, we were having lunch! Food time is my favorite part of the day! When they came back and had lunch themselves, then I was taken for another walk, by the pond, where I promptly tried to stalk a large dog. What can I say? I want to be friends with everyone!

Soooo, remember that sign from earlier? About no digging? Well, my human walked me over the falls again, and I sniffed the ground. It smelled interesting, so I may have started…um, spreading the dirt. Yeah, that’s what we’ll call it! It wasn’t the “d” word! My human told me to stop, so I did. Until I started again. You can’t stop me! Well, at least I thought you can’t, but my human moved me away before I could dig an actual hole. I guess she didn’t want it to end up like the garden at home, which has plenty of holes, thanks to yours truly.
We ran into a really friendly dog on the way out, so I got to make one friend! I consider that to be a successful day. We packed everything up and made the journey home. Frankie didn’t throw up that time, but he did spit up some grass. I swear, that kid thinks he’s a lawn mower!
Overall, Southford Falls is Reba approved! Us dogs have to be on a leash though, so no free leashing here. It’s not overly large, so if you’re looking for a quick hike, this is a good place to go, especially if you’re only looping around the falls. You can stretch out your time there by having a picnic, which I highly approve of. Just don’t forget the food for your furry friends! We like to eat, too. Fishing for trout is permitted, if you’re into that. Personally, I don’t have the paws for it. The only downfall of the place is that digging is not allowed!
I’ll see you soon for the next adventure!
